The Book of Tobit, a rich and dramatic narrative from the Deuterocanonical books (or Apocrypha), contains some of the most vivid storytelling and poignant theological reflections in ancient literature. Nestled within its chapters is a famous scene—Tobit 8:4b–8—that shifts from high-stakes narrative tension into a quiet, deeply intimate moment of vulnerability, faith, and partnership.
Setting the Scene
To understand the weight of Tobit 8:4b–8, it helps to look at what led up to it. The groom, Tobias, has just married Sarah under extraordinary circumstances. Sarah’s previous seven husbands had all tragically died on their wedding nights due to a malicious affliction. Tobias, guided and protected by the angel Raphael, knows the danger he faces. Yet, rather than acting out of panic, he enters the bridal chamber relying on faith.
Once the wedding guests depart and the heavy bedroom door is shut, the stage is set for an unexpected beginning to a marriage: an appeal to the divine.
A Prayer of Intention and Humility
Instead of romance in the traditional Hollywood sense, Tobias turns to Sarah with an urgent yet calm invitation: “Sister, get up, and let us pray and implore our Lord that he grant us mercy and safety”.
The prayer that follows (spoken by Tobias, with Sarah joining in wholeheartedly) is packed with historical and theological echoes:
- Creation and Purpose: Tobias invokes the God of his ancestors and looks back to the very beginning—reminding God of the creation of Adam and Eve. He quotes the ancient truth, “It is not good that the man should be alone; let us make a helper for him like himself”. By doing this, Tobias frames their union not as a casual arrangement, but as a continuation of God’s foundational design for human companionship.
- Purity of Motive: Tobias explicitly states his intention: “I now am taking this kinswoman of mine, not because of lust, but with sincerity”. In a story shadowed by fear and loss, this line highlights a love rooted in respect, integrity, and a higher purpose.
- The Shared Hope: The prayer culminates in a deeply human, touching request: “Grant that she and I may find mercy and that may we grow old together”.
The Power of “Amen”
The passage concludes with a striking display of unity. As Tobias finishes his heartfelt plea for protection, mercy, and a long life side-by-side, Sarah responds. Together, the couple seals the prayer with a joint affirmation: “And they both said, ‘Amen, Amen’”.
This shared “Amen” is symbolic. It shows that they are stepping into their future not as isolated individuals carrying separate burdens, but as a unified team sharing the exact same hopes and fears.
Enduring Resonance
Centuries later, Tobit 8:4b–8 remains a celebrated text, frequently chosen as a reading for modern wedding ceremonies. It offers a timeless blueprint for relationships: one where fear is met with faith, partnership is grounded in a shared spiritual foundation, and the ultimate goal of love is simply to support one another through the journey of a lifetime.
