The Final Note: When and How the Voice of Love, KK, Left Us
For millions of music lovers across South Asia and beyond, the voice of Krishnakumar Kunnath—universally known simply as KK—was the soundtrack of growing up, falling in love, and nursing a broken heart. From the nostalgic chords of Pal and Yaaron to cinematic heartbreak anthems like Tadap Tadap Ke and soulful hits like Khuda Jaane, his voice possessed an unmatched emotional clarity.
Tragically, that golden voice was silenced abruptly on May 31, 2022. He was 53 years old.
The Final Performance: May 31, 2022
KK spent his final hours doing what he loved most: performing live on stage. On the evening of May 31, 2022, he traveled to Kolkata, West Bengal, to perform at a college concert hosted at the Nazrul Mancha auditorium.
By all accounts, it was a high-energy, high-intensity show. KK delivered a passionate performance running close to three hours, interacting with fans and belting out hit after hit. Ironically, one of the tracks he performed during that fateful concert was his iconic song Hum Rahe Ya Na Rahe Kal (“Whether we stay or not tomorrow”).
What Happened After the Show?
Immediately following the concert, KK left the venue and returned to his hotel in the Esplanade area of Kolkata. During the short drive and shortly after arriving back at his hotel room, he began to feel severely uneasy and unwell, complaining of tightness and pain.
His condition rapidly deteriorated, and he reportedly collapsed. Urgently rushed to the nearby Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) around 10:30 PM, medical staff pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Subsequent medical examinations and the official autopsy report confirmed that KK suffered a massive myocardial infarction (heart attack). The autopsy later revealed that the singer had major coronary blockages, which went largely unnoticed amidst the physical exhaustion and immense physical toll of his high-energy stage presence.
A Nation in Mourning
The news of KK’s sudden passing sent shockwaves across India, plunging the film fraternity, political figures, and millions of fans into profound grief. Tributes poured in from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, legendary co-artists, and generations of fans who felt as though they had lost an intimate friend.
What made his death so heartbreaking was its suddenness—he was performing on stage just hours before, completely unaware that it would be his final curtain call. KK was later cremated in Mumbai in the presence of his grieving family, friends, and colleagues, leaving behind his wife Jyothy, children Nakul and Tamara, and a monumental musical legacy.
Though he left us on a quiet night in Kolkata, KK’s timeless melodies ensure that his voice continues to live on in the hearts of millions.
