Have you ever wished you could snap your fingers and spin up a specialized version of ChatGPT tailored precisely to your workflow? Whether you want a strict code reviewer, a personal meal planner, or a creative writing partner that knows your stylistic quirks by heart, OpenAI provides a dedicated workshop space for this exact purpose: Custom GPTs.

Stepping into this environment requires knowing where the door is, what tools await you inside, and how to shape your assistant from a blank slate into a functional reality.

Step 1: Locating the Workshop Space

To access the environment where custom AI assistants are built, you need to navigate to the creation interface. Depending on your workspace setup and recent platform updates, you can open this space using a couple of primary paths:

  1. The Direct URL Route: Log into your account at chatgpt.com, and navigate directly to chatgpt.com/gpts.
  2. The Sidebar Route: Look at the left-hand navigation sidebar of your ChatGPT interface. Click on Explore GPTs (or navigate via your profile/workspace menu options depending on your layout).
  3. The Creation Trigger: Once inside the GPT directory or workspace area, look for the prominent + Create button (or “Create a GPT”).

Note: Access to creating and publishing new custom GPTs typically depends on your account tier or workspace permissions (such as eligible Team, Enterprise, Edu, or qualifying workspaces).

Step 2: Navigating the Split-Screen Interface

Clicking “Create” drops you straight into the GPT Builder workspace, which is split into two distinct panels:

| CREATE PANEL | PREVIEW PANEL |
| | |
| - Conversational chat interface | - Live sandbox environment |
| - "Configure" manual settings | - Real-time test driving |
| - System instructions & files | - Instant feedback loop |
+-----------------------------------+-----------------------------------+
  • The Create Panel (Left): This is your control center. It features two tabs: Create (where you chat with the Meta-Builder assistant in natural language to build your bot step-by-step) and Configure (where you manually tweak parameters, upload files, and write raw system instructions).
  • The Preview Panel (Right): This is your live sandbox. As you talk to the builder or edit your instructions, you can immediately test your new AI assistant here, throw test prompts at it, and see how it responds.

Step 3: Designing Your Assistant

Once inside the space, you have two primary methods to sculpt your AI:

Method A: The Conversational Builder

If you prefer talking rather than coding or writing strict configuration parameters, stay in the Create tab. Tell the meta-builder what you want in plain English:

“Build me an assistant that helps me outline science-fiction novels. It should ask me questions about character motives one at a time and push back on cliché plot holes.”

The builder will automatically draft a name, pick a profile picture (or generate one via DALL-E), write initial system prompts, and set up conversation starters for you.

Method B: The Manual Configure Tab

If you prefer total, granular control, click over to the Configure tab. Here, you can manually fine-tune every aspect of your assistant:

  • Name & Description: Define how your assistant appears in directories and previews.
  • Instructions: The core “brain” of your assistant. This is where you write explicit behavioral rules, constraints, and step-by-step workflows (
