UNO Zero (frequently known as UNO Golf in other regions) is a clever card game that turns traditional UNO mechanics on their head. Instead of trying to get rid of all your cards first, your goal is to lower your score by systematically replacing high-value cards with low-value ones.
If you love tactical decision-making, memory management, and a dash of press-your-luck tension, this game is a fantastic addition to game night.
1. The Core Objective
The overarching goal of UNO Zero is to finish a series of rounds (typically 9 rounds) with the fewest total points possible. Inside each round, you are trying to minimize the value of the grid of cards sitting right in front of you.
2. Setup
- The Grid: Shuffle the deck and deal six cards face-down to each player. Players must not look at their dealt cards. Each player arranges their six cards into a 2×3 grid (2 rows high by 3 columns wide) directly in front of them.
- The Initial Reveal: Once everyone’s grid is set, each player chooses any one card in their grid to flip face-up.
- Draw & Discard Piles: Place the remaining deck face-down in the center as the Draw Pile. Flip the top card face-up to start the Discard Pile.
- Note: If the very first flipped card is an Action Card, ignore it and flip another until a standard number card appears.
3. How to Play
The player to the left of the dealer goes first, and play moves clockwise. On your turn, you must choose one of two options:
Option A: Draw from the Draw Pile
- Draw the top card from the deck.
- Decide to keep or discard:
- If you want it, choose any one card in your 2×3 grid (it can be a face-up card or an unknown face-down card) and replace it with your newly drawn card. The old card goes face-up onto the Discard Pile.
- If you don’t want the card, simply discard it face-up. As a penalty for passing on the draw, you must flip over one of your remaining face-down cards.
Option B: Take from the Discard Pile
- Take the top card from the Discard Pile. (Note: You must use this card; you cannot immediately discard it back).
- Swap it into your grid by replacing any face-up or face-down card, sending the replaced card to the Discard Pile.
4. Special Mechanics: Clearing Columns & Action Cards
- Clearing Columns: If you ever manage to get two cards of the exact same number or the exact same color stacked vertically in a single column, that column is cleared! Remove both cards and place them on the discard pile. This shrinks your grid, removing potential points from your final score.
- Action Cards in the Grid: UNO Zero features action cards like Reverse, Skip, Draw Two, and Double Draw Two. You can swap these into your grid if needed, but they do nothing while sitting in your grid. They only count for their printed point values at the end of the round.
- Action Cards on the Discard Pile: If an action card is sitting on top of the discard pile at the end of a player’s turn, its effect triggers for the next player (
