Nelson “Sonny” Collantes: A Life of Public Service, Legislative Legacy, and Local Leadership in Batangas

Nelson “Sonny” Perez Collantes is a prominent figure in Philippine local and national governance. With a career spanning several decades, Collantes has transitioned from national legislative halls to executive leadership at the local level, leaving an indelible mark on the political and developmental landscape of Batangas province. Beyond his political offices, he is also recognized for his contributions as a military reservist, bridging the worlds of public administration, civil service, and national defense.

Early Background and Military Service

Born on May 5, 1952, Sonny Collantes developed an early interest in civic organization and governance. Alongside his civilian pursuits, he maintained a profound commitment to the uniformed services. Over the years, he balanced his political ambitions with active participation in national defense readiness, ultimately earning the rank of Brigadier General in the Philippine Air Force Reserve—a promotion officially confirmed by the Commission on Appointments.

His executive capabilities were recognized early on at the national level when he served as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Secretary of the Interior and Local Government during the final month of the Ramos administration in June 1998. This high-level exposure provided him with deep institutional insights into the inner workings of local government units (LGUs) across the Philippines.

National Legislative Impact (2010–2016)

Collantes stepped onto the national stage as a legislator when he was elected as the Member of the House of Representatives representing the 3rd District of Batangas, serving from 2010 to 2016.

During his three-term tenure in Congress, his legislative agenda heavily emphasized:

  • Economic Reform and Fiscal Responsibility: Pushing for policies that fostered a friendly environment for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
  • Regional Development: Championing infrastructure initiatives and public works tailored to the rapidly growing Calabarzon region.
  • Public Welfare: Sponsoring and co-authoring bills aimed at upgrading health, education, and social services.

Following his congressional run, the Collantes family tradition of representation continued, with his wife, Maria Theresa “Maitet” Collantes, carrying the torch forward for the 3rd District of Batangas in the House of Representatives.

Executive Leadership as Mayor of Tanauan City

In June 2022, Sonny Collantes pivoted back to local executive governance, winning the mayoral race for Tanauan City, Batangas under the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC). Taking the helm of a first-class component city, Mayor Collantes has focused heavily on modernizing local bureaucracy, stimulating post-pandemic economic recovery, and expanding social services for Tanaueños.
