Master the Lyre: How to Complete “The Gift of Song” in Hades
If you have been spending time decorating Zagreus’ bedroom in the House of Hades, you might have eventually crossed paths with the Lyre. While it starts out sounding like a collection of tragic, uncoordinated plucks, it actually ties into one of the game’s most famous—and notoriously grindy—minor prophecies: “The Gift of Song”.
Fulfilling this prophecy takes a bit of patience, but checking it off your Fated List brings you one step closer to 100% completion (plus a sweet reward). Here is everything you need to do to turn Zagreus from a musical disaster into a halfway-decent player.
Step 1: Unlocking the Prophecy
Before you can officially start tracking progress, you need to lay the groundwork in the House of Hades:
- Purchase the Lyre: Head over to the House Contractor and buy the Lyre decoration for Zagreus’ Bedchamber using gemstones.
- Pluck the Strings: Interact with the Lyre a few times. Zagreus will play a few notes, and he will sound objectively terrible.
- Befriend Orpheus: Give Nectar to Orpheus and chat with him regularly. Eventually, after certain milestones (like hearing him start singing again or telling him about defeating the Bone Hydra), he will give Zagreus some advice on how to practice the instrument.
- Check Your Desk: Once Orpheus gives you pointers, “The Gift of Song” prophecy will officially appear on your Fated List of Minor Prophecies.
Step 2: The Practice Grind (210+ Interactions)
This is where the real work begins. To complete the prophecy, you have to practice the Lyre. However, you can’t just spam-click it 210 times in a single run and call it a day; the game has built-in safety checks for your progress.
- The Routine: Every single time you successfully escape or return to the House of Hades (via death), make it a habit to visit your bedroom and play the Lyre once.
- Talk to Orpheus: Intermittently check in with Orpheus between your practice sessions. Progressing his dialogue helps update the quest flags. If your practice seems stuck, you likely need to go talk to Orpheus or advance other storylines in the house.
- The Magic Number: In total, you will need roughly 210+ interactions with the Lyre.
Step 3: Reaping the Rewards
You will know you are finally at the finish line when Zagreus stops fumbling. Instead of the usual discordant noise, he will play a genuinely pleasant, smooth tune, and his voice line will change to reflect that he has finally mastered the basics.
Once this happens:
- Speak to Orpheus one last time if he has a pending exclamation point (
!). - Head back to Zagreus’ Desk to clear the prophecy from your Fated List.
- Collect your reward of 2x Ambrosia to upgrade your relationships with the denizens of the underworld.
Pro-Tip: Don’t stress about finishing this all at once! Treat the Lyre as a fun “homecoming routine” after every run, and you’ll complete “The Gift of Song” naturally as you progress through the main story.
