Bridging the Digital Divide Beneath the Waves: The Pioneering Work of Dr. Aijun Song
While humanity has mapped the stars and blanketed the terrestrial globe in a web of high-speed Wi-Fi and 5G networks, a vast expanse of our own planet remains fundamentally disconnected. Covering over 70% of the Earth’s surface, the world’s oceans and freshwater bodies are a digital dark zone. Because standard radio frequency waves—the backbone of land-based communications—attenuate rapidly just feet beneath water, transmitting information sub-surface has historically been slow, expensive, and severely limited.
Enter Dr. Aijun Song, an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Alabama. As a leading figure in marine technology, digital communications, and signal processing, Dr. Song is spearheading breakthroughs that are transforming the Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) from theoretical science fiction into practical reality.
From Terrestrial Foundations to Subaquatic Discovery
Dr. Song’s scientific journey is rooted in a lifelong curiosity about how signals move through the physical world. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Xidian University in Xi’an, China, before moving to the United States to pursue a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Delaware.
