The Voice, the Stage, and the Crown: The Rise of Johannes Pietsch

In the ever-evolving landscape of modern European pop, rare is the artist who can effortlessly bridge the gap between centuries-old classical traditions and the high-energy pulse of contemporary radio. Enter Johannes Pietsch—better known to the world by his stage name, JJ—an Austrian singer whose breathtaking vocal agility and distinct pop-opera style captured the continent’s heart.

From classical training grounds to international television stages, Pietsch’s journey is a testament to what happens when relentless dedication meets a truly one-of-a-kind voice.

Early Roots and Multicultural Background

Born on April 29, 2001, in Vienna, Austria, to an Austrian father and a Filipino mother, Pietsch’s early life was shaped by diverse cultural and sonic landscapes. While he spent the majority of his childhood growing up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, music was a constant language in his household.

His exposure to the arts was a fascinating juxtaposition: he soaked up mainstream pop culture through family karaoke parties while simultaneously being introduced to the deep, dramatic world of opera by his father. These dual influences laid the foundation for his signature vocal styling—a powerful blend of classical discipline and contemporary accessibility. Returning to Vienna in 2016, Pietsch fully committed to honing his craft, studying and performing at prestigious institutions including the Vienna State Opera’s opera school and the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.

Honing the Craft on International Stages

Before achieving widespread household fame, Pietsch sought out global platforms to test his mettle as a performer. In 2020, he stepped into the international spotlight as a contestant on the ninth series of The Voice UK, where his powerhouse vocals earned him a spot on coach will.i.am’s team, advancing all the way to the knockouts. Not stopping there, he also competed in the fifth season of Austria’s Starmania in 2021, reaching the first final show.

These television appearances served as crucial stepping stones, sharpening his stage presence and introducing him to a growing digital audience. Yet, his defining masterpiece was still waiting in the wings.

The Eurovision Triumph

The defining moment of Pietsch’s career arrived in early 2025, when the Austrian broadcaster ORF announced him as the country’s representative for the 69th Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Wasted Love”. Co-written by Pietsch alongside Austrian 2023 representative Teodora Špirić and producer Thomas Thurner, the track was a sweeping, emotional tour de force that showcased his extraordinary range as a sopranist (a soprano-type countertenor).

When May rolled around, Pietsch took the international stage by storm. In the grand final, he delivered a soaring, flawless vocal performance that resonated deeply with both juries and viewers at home. He secured a historic victory for Austria with a total of 436 points (258 from the jury and 178 from the televote).

The victory broke several historic milestones:

  • He became the first Eurovision winner of Southeast Asian descent.
  • He made history as the first solo Eurovision winner born in the 21st century.

Continuing the Melody

In the wake of his Eurovision glory, Pietsch has wasted no time capitalizing on his momentum. He released his debut EP, Into the Unknown, in May 2026, accompanied by extensive promotional touring. He has also continued to rack up accolades, including winning multiple fan-voted Eurovision Awards—such as Outstanding Vocals and #ALBM Cover of the Year for his unforgettable mashup of “Rise Like a Phoenix” and “Wasted Love” alongside Conchita Wurst.

Off the stage, Pietsch has used his prominent platform to advocate for communities close to his heart, speaking openly about his identity and championing representation.
